Corning Gaffer District Stinks - Oh yeah - this makes sense

Oh Boy - Here we go again :-(

The Gaffer District announced some nice improvements to the Centerway Square parking facility today.

Their press release talks about the nice benefit of the garage now being able to accept credit and debit cards, and how this will be such a nice improvement for Market Street.

I agree with that statement - but buried in the middle of the release is another "improvement" - they are going to DOUBLE the cost to park there! Parking is increasing from $2 per entry to $4 per entry (prior to 1:00pm daily).

What are they thinking?

They do a nice job with the garage, and it is free to park there after 5:00pm, but who are they kidding? They announce an "improvement" and a few sentences later tell us they are doubling the cost for residents and businesses? This is one of the few decisions they have made recently that actually hurts businesses more than residents - welcome to the party!

Corning's Gaffer District - What are they thinking??

I had the same reaction as this child when I heard the news about Sorge's restaurant. I was very happy to read that Sorge's restaurant will be reopening in April. This is great news for Market Street.

I was very surprised, puzzled, and amazed to read that they plan on having apartments over the restaurant, as reported in the Corning Leader:

What are they thinking? The Gaffer District is great for business - but horrible for residents. No matter how nice they make the apartments, second floor living on Market Street is absolutely terrible.

Corning Gaffer District - Makes Babies (and Adults) Cry

This is what children who have the misfortune of living in the Gaffer District look like when they have been awakened multiple times by DPW crews at 1:00am. Why can't the City of Corning and the Gaffer District trim trees and remove Christmas decorations at 8, 9, or even 10pm? The answer is simple - they choose not to.

Corning's Gaffer District is great for business, but horrible for residents.

Gaffer District Corning = Not Worth It

Someone asked me why I bother bringing the issues of the Gaffer District to everyone's attention via this blog. The answer is simple - the Corning Gaffer District doesn't care about residents - only businesses.


I wouldn't expect to have a decent quality of life living in an industrial park. I would know - this place is for businesses. The Gaffer District promotes itself as being a nice, clean, trendy, and hip place to live - but that is not the case. The Gaffer District is only interested in helping building owners rent their apartments - they don't care about the quality of life the tenants get once they move in. If they did, they would stand up for the residents and stop all of the DPW noise at night.


A few nights ago a DPW crew was using a large bucket loader to take down snowflake decorations at 1:00am. I am not anti-business, but most businesses on the street are closed after 6-8pm. The Gaffer District couldn't have taken down the decorations at 9:00pm instead of 1:00am?


I would much rather have my evening television watching interupted by the rumbling of multiple diesel engines, as compared to my sleep when I (and my neighbors) have to get up in the morning.


There are at least 10 other individuals, couples, or families that live within two buildings of my apartment, so I'm certain the bucket loader and diesel engines kept them awake as well.

I think the other reviews have said it all. I found these poor reviews when I did a Google search to find the Gaffer Districts phone number to complain about recent DPW work. There was a crew working up and down Market Street on Monday 3/1 (or more specifically, in the morning of 3/2) taking down Christmas decorations. There were two guys, one with a pick-up truck and one with a large bucket loader. Both trucks were running the entire time. They would go to one decoration, park the truck, keep it running, move the bucket loader up and down, back the truck up (with the back-up alarm beeping etc). I actually approached the men as they were right outside our bedroom window, and one of the workers nicely replied "would you prefer we fire up the chainsaw and start trimming the trees". Hows that for being treated with respect from a public employee.

I asked them if it was really neccessary to be doing this work at 12:30am, and they said their boss "Brian McCarthy" demanded that it be done that evening, and if I had a problem with it I should call him. I told them that I doubted they would be making this amount of noise in a residential neighborhood, and the worker agreed stating - that is why they send all of their crews at night to Market Street and Bridge Street.

Unlike the other posters I am not a renter, I own a building on Market Street, which makes it more difficult for me to move. Nonetheless, I really dont think the Gaffer District should be promoting second floor living because I just dont think they have created a decent living environment for residents. Over time, I will most likely renovate my apartment into additional commercial space and move to one of the residential neighborhoods.

Corning's Gaffer District - Too Loud for Residents!

Corning is a great place to live and raise a family - just dont do it in the Gaffer District.

The Gaffer District is constantly looking for ways to attract tenants for high end apartments on Market Street. Second floor living on Market Street is heavily marketed, with all sorts of incentives provided to developers, and the living spaces are nice, but the environment is absolutely horrible.

The trouble is that despite all of their marketing towards residential tenants and owners, the City of Corning and the Gaffer District still consider Market Street a "Business District". What this means is that at least a couple times a week there are public works crews on the street cutting down trees, fixing stop signs, hanging banners up for the next business event etc. Normally this wouldn't be a bad thing - until you find out that all of this work is done after midnight. The public works department works in residential neighborhoods during the day - and in business districts during the evening.

You only have to be awakened once at 1am by the sound of large diesel trucks backing up (complete with the BEEP, BEEP, BEEP) or by chainsaws trimming trees, to realize that you have made a mistake in moving here.

If you want to work in the Gaffer District - Great - but if you want to live in Corning, do yourself a favor and move away from the Gaffer district.

I only wish I had spoken to other tenants before signing my lease. Once my lease is expired I will be moving to an area that the city considers "residential" so I can finally have a night with uninterupted sleep.
