Corning Gaffer District Stinks - Oh yeah - this makes sense

Oh Boy - Here we go again :-(

The Gaffer District announced some nice improvements to the Centerway Square parking facility today.

Their press release talks about the nice benefit of the garage now being able to accept credit and debit cards, and how this will be such a nice improvement for Market Street.

I agree with that statement - but buried in the middle of the release is another "improvement" - they are going to DOUBLE the cost to park there! Parking is increasing from $2 per entry to $4 per entry (prior to 1:00pm daily).

What are they thinking?

They do a nice job with the garage, and it is free to park there after 5:00pm, but who are they kidding? They announce an "improvement" and a few sentences later tell us they are doubling the cost for residents and businesses? This is one of the few decisions they have made recently that actually hurts businesses more than residents - welcome to the party!

Corning's Gaffer District - Too Loud for Residents!

Corning is a great place to live and raise a family - just dont do it in the Gaffer District.

The Gaffer District is constantly looking for ways to attract tenants for high end apartments on Market Street. Second floor living on Market Street is heavily marketed, with all sorts of incentives provided to developers, and the living spaces are nice, but the environment is absolutely horrible.

The trouble is that despite all of their marketing towards residential tenants and owners, the City of Corning and the Gaffer District still consider Market Street a "Business District". What this means is that at least a couple times a week there are public works crews on the street cutting down trees, fixing stop signs, hanging banners up for the next business event etc. Normally this wouldn't be a bad thing - until you find out that all of this work is done after midnight. The public works department works in residential neighborhoods during the day - and in business districts during the evening.

You only have to be awakened once at 1am by the sound of large diesel trucks backing up (complete with the BEEP, BEEP, BEEP) or by chainsaws trimming trees, to realize that you have made a mistake in moving here.

If you want to work in the Gaffer District - Great - but if you want to live in Corning, do yourself a favor and move away from the Gaffer district.

I only wish I had spoken to other tenants before signing my lease. Once my lease is expired I will be moving to an area that the city considers "residential" so I can finally have a night with uninterupted sleep.
